Planting Community in Hillman City

The Hillman City Planter Project was originally proposed by neighbor Lindsey Werkhoven. Lindsey received a grant from the Columbia Hillman Arts & Cultural District to add mosaics to the business district’s existing concrete planters. The Rainier Avenue Business Coalition had also put aside funding to help replant and rejuvenate the planters. Both of these funding sources were made possible by the National Economic Recovery Act. When it proved to be a much larger project, Majken Ryherd and the talented team at Seattle Mosaic Arts came to the rescue. They donated their time and talents to make this community project happen. Neighbor Sam Anderson, a.k.a. Worker Sam, was brought on board to replant the planters and has been crucial for their maintenance and upkeep.

The theme of this project is fireworks, acknowledging the role of the Hitt’s Fireworks Company and namesake of Hitt’s Hill. In the early 20th century, Hitt’s Fireworks Company was one of the largest manufacturers of fireworks and also elaborately produced shows. Their products were used in multiple movies, including Gone with the Wind
